Buying a home is a significant financial decision. With so many things to focus on, it can be difficult to prioritize responsibilities and hone in on what’s important. Buying a home shouldn’t be stressful, but an exciting time in your life. To help you get started, we’ve identified your first three considerations.

  1. Use a word-of-mouth real estate agent. Word-of-mouth is still the most powerful marketing tool and real estate agents love referrals. Ask a trusted family member or friend about the agents they’ve used and their experiences. You can also cross-reference the referral by checking the agent’s reviews on Zillow and Yelp, just to name a few. Once you’re ready to contact the agent, let them know who referred you!
  2. Know what you can afford. Get pre-approved prior to house hunting. This will keep you on track and help control your caviar taste. There’s no use looking and falling in love with a home you can’t afford. Know your budget and stick to that. If your pre-approval amount doesn’t fit your taste, you may need to reevaluate your home buying needs.
  3. Turnkey or fixer upper…what’s best for you? What’s your fancy? It can be easy to get caught up in the HGTV fantasy and underestimate the work and time it takes to rehab a house. Are you prepared for that? With fixer-uppers, you really have to be passionate and see the end goal because timelines can extend and budgets can increase. If that’s what you’re looking for, go for it! If not, a turnkey home may be right for you.
